Ivan Stiles brings a unique blend of traditional to contemporary folk music to his
audiences. Intricate fiddle-speed tunes, old-time favorites, music of the British
Isles, traditional ballads, and original songs are skillfully interpreted on the
autoharp, mountain dulcimer, bowed psaltery, and musical saw.
Workshops from beginning through advanced levels are available and can be tailored
to suit the needs of the participants including basic strumming through advanced
melody picking on chromatic or diatonic autoharps. Requires no knowledge of written
Appalachian Dulcimer Workshops
Beginning through intermediate dulcimer workshops are offered. Subject covered include
basic strumming, chord formation, and finger-picking techniques. Requires no knowledge
of written music.
Bowed Psaltery Workshop
An introduction to the bowed psaltery offers participants the opportunity to learn
to play the bowed psaltery with two bows. The first bow is used to play the melody
and the second bow is used to play the harmony. Two bows can also be used to play
fast tunes more easily. Requires no knowledge of written music.
Musical Saw Workshop
This workshop teaches the basics needed to play haunting tunes with only a saw and
bow. Beginning level - requires no knowledge of written music.
